Leadership Development Requirements
Leadership Development Requirements
LDR activities are AF/SF JROTC-sponsored and school-approved teams and/or committees of cadets that normally operate outside classroom hours (before school/after school). However, some LDR activities may be incorporated into regular classroom instruction.
Tier I
The first tier of these LDRs is going to be STEM-based. STEM-based LDRs have a Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, or academia-related base. These teams will also include National-level competition opportunities. Here at TX-20016 we have...
Rocketry Team
Model rocketry is the designing, building, and flying of small rockets that are made of paper, plastic, balsa wood, or any other lightweight material. Model rockets constructed in this manner are approved for use by AF/SF JROTC cadets. Members of this team will learn how to build and launch model rockets. Team members will compete at Rocketry meets and document their accomplishments. Cadets who meet the AFJROTC qualifications are also eligible for a rocketry badge, which is worn with the Blues uniform.
JLAB
JLAB (JROTC Leadership and Academic Bowl) is a nationally recognized academic competition created exclusively for JROTC students. By participating, cadets learn the values of citizenship
Drones
One of the latest STEM LDRs, Drones are unmanned aircraft. This team learns about drones, flight principles, programming, and competes at local and national competitions. Although TX-20016 does not offer this team at the moment, cadets with initiative can petition the Top 3 to create this team if enough cadets are interested.
Robotics
Robotics involves the design, construction, operation, and use of robots in a sports-like competition. During this process, cadets will learn key STEM principles and robotics concepts. At the culmination of this course, they will compete head-to-head against their peers in the classroom or on the world stage in the VEX Robotics Competition, the largest and fastest-growing international robotics competition for high school students. Although TX-20016 does not offer this team at the moment, cadets with initiative can petition the Top 3 to create this team if enough cadets are interested.
CyberPatriots
CyberPatriot is the National Youth Cyber Education Program. The competition puts teams of high school and middle school students in the position of newly hired IT professionals tasked with managing the network of a small company. Although TX-20016 does not offer this team at the moment, cadets with initiative can petition the Top 3 to create this team if enough cadets are interested.
StellarXplorers
StellarXplorers inspires and attracts high school students to pursue studies and careers in STEM-related fields through a challenging, space system design competition involving all aspects of system development and operation with a spacecraft/payload focus. Although TX-20016 does not offer this team at the moment, cadets with initiative can petition the Top 3 to create this team if enough cadets are interested.
Tier II
The next tier of LDRs is called Activity-Based, and it includes any LDR that may or may not have a STEM or academia-related base but does have an outside partnership and/or local level or above competition opportunity. Here in TX-20016, we participate in this tier.
Color Guard
Color Guard is a highly professional and patriotic team that combines precision drill and proper flag courtesies. Primary functions include casing and uncasing, presenting, folding, posting, and retiring the colors. Team members must be dedicated to learning the Manual of Arms and flag etiquette.
Saber Team
The Saber Team is a marching team that performs routines based on military drill while armed with sabers. The Saber Team learns to execute a saber arch for events such as homecoming, awards ceremonies, military ball, and graduation. This team can also perform at drill meets.
PT Raiders
Raiders is a very popular athletic competition held within JROTC programs. Raiders is designed for small groups of physically fit and mentally tough cadets who compete in various outdoor activities preferably in a very primitive-type location with solid amenities to ensure safety of the participants.
Kitty Hawk Honor Society
The Kitty Hawk Honor Society (KHHS) program is the official National Honor Society of AF/SF JROTC and has three primary objectives:
- Uphold high academic standards
- Promote school and/or community service
- Develop leadership skills
KHHS also recognizes academic excellence and furthers members’ educational knowledge.
Academic Team
This group of cadets performs at all drill competitions and establishes the Academic Bowl team. The team chooses members to compete at each event who have to make and brief a military-related presentation and take an academic test that may vary in content from JROTC to normal high school studies. This team also comes together and competes internationally against all other AFJROTC teams in the annual Academic Bowl.
Orienteering
Orienteering is a competitive international sport that combines racing with navigation. It is a timed race in which individual parties use a specially created highly detailed map to select routes and navigate through diverse and often unfamiliar terrain and visit control points in sequence. Courses can also be for walking/hiking in the woods, with difficulty levels from beginner to expert. Although TX-20016 does not offer this team at the moment, cadets with initiative can petition the Top 3 to create this team if enough cadets are interested.
Tier III
The third and final tier of LDRs is called Unit-Based. Unit-based LDRs are any LDRs that are local level only and primarily benefit the Cadet Corps, school, and/or local community.
Spirit Team
This team consists of a flag running team and an overall spirit team prepared to be interactive with the crowd and perform physical fitness as a result of our home team accomplishments (i.e. football touchdowns). You must wear the designated PT uniform combination and participate with the team during sporting events. You will earn free admission into home games and community service hours for each event.
Flag Security Detail
The Flag Support Detachment (FSD) is a specialized unit responsible for the daily execution of morning and evening colors, ensuring the respectful raising and lowering of the national ensign.
Green Team
Green Team is a community service event we do in and out of school where we clean up around our campus and what we like to call “adopt a highway.” Our cadets clean up Fry Road and we take pride in that.
